Camano's housing tells the usual island story with a twist: '60s–'80s beach cabins at Utsalady, Madrona Beach, and Tyee Beach that became year-round homes, substantial view construction along the west-shore bluffs facing Saratoga Passage, and wooded interior lots where shade and moss replace salt as the enemy. The west shore takes southwest weather across open water; the east side toward Port Susan is gentler but still marine. Everything corrodes cheap hardware eventually here.
Camano is unincorporated Island County — permits run through the county, and the county's Camano Annex on East Camano Drive takes permit applications and staffs a land-use planner on set days — and shoreline parcels can carry extra review. We confirm per address; access is the Stanwood bridge, so scheduling works like the mainland.
…and the interior wooded roads between the shores.

What Moves the Cost in Camano Island?
Every bid is measured on site and itemized — these are the factors that actually change the number.
Wall area drives material; height drives scaffold time. A west-bluff view home prices differently than an interior rambler — and bluff staging is planned, not improvised.
Siding replacement →What's behind the old siding is the honest unknown — on a full-home re-side, sheathing rot repair is typically included at no extra cost, and anything past the sheathing, which is very uncommon, is quoted as a change order.
Rot repair →Hardie ColorPlus, primed fiber cement, or engineered wood — we quote options side by side so you see the real difference.
Compare materials →Combining siding and windows saves one full mobilization and gets properly integrated flashing — the cheapest time to do windows is during a re-side.

How Camano Island Was Built
Camano's first buildings existed to cut the island down. Utsalady, at the north end, grew up around one of Puget Sound's largest sawmills — founded in 1858 by Lawrence Grennan and Thomas Cranney, shipping masts and lumber as far as China before the mill closed in the 1890s depression. The logging that followed stripped the island's old growth, and by the early 1900s Camano was cutover land waiting for a new purpose.
The bridge decided what that purpose would be. A swing bridge across the Stillaguamish connected Camano to Stanwood in 1909, and once cars became common in the 1920s, summer cabins started lining the most accessible beaches — Utsalady, Madrona, Tyee — alongside auto parks and fishing resorts, most famously Cama Beach, opened in 1934. These were true weekend buildings: light framing, single-wall construction in places, siding chosen for cost rather than weather.
The postwar decades platted the island in earnest — Country Club, Elger Bay, and the west-shore view lots — and the 1950 Mark Clark Bridge made the drive routine. What followed was Camano's defining housing story: retirees and commuters converted the cabin stock to year-round homes, and from the 1990s on, substantial view construction rose along the Saratoga Passage bluffs where the southwest weather hits hardest.
Today's Camano Gateway Bridge, opened in 2010, keeps the island a normal drive from I-5 — no ferry in its history and none needed. For exteriors, the island splits three ways: promoted cabins whose framing and sills need honest scoping, west-bluff view homes that take open-water salt and wind, and gentler Port Susan and interior lots where shade and moss do the slow damage instead.
